There are a lot of changes happening in automobile industry and one of them is about having connected cars concept. Connected cars concept is a concept whereby cars will be able to communicate with each others through a network with the help of technology in real time. Therefore, whatever one car experience, it can be shared to all the other cars so that other cars able to learn about it and make decision based on it.
Samsung plans to enter this market. However, unlike what the other competitors are doing, Samsung wants to push through the older cars with the company’s new product Samsung Connect Auto as announced recently. Google and Apple are putting Android Auto and CarPlay respectively in new vehicles.
Samsung Connect Auto will run Tizen, the same operating system used on Gear 2 smartwatch. When the product plugged into the diagnostic port found in most of the older cars made over the last two decades, it will offer LTE internet access and services like roadside assistance or usage-based insurance.
The service is made possible through partnership with AT&T in the United States and it is planned to launch in the second quarter. The device and service pricing is still unknown at the moment. The product is also still in development stage.
Samsung also plans to work with partners around the globe such as Amdocs, AXA, China Unicom, Cisco, Ericsson, Europcar, HERE, IBM, Jasper, Oberthur Technologies, Openbay, Orange and Willis Towers Watson.
