Proterra’s manufactured all-electric bus, the Catalyst XR was reported to be able to travel 258 miles on a single charge based on test conditions at Michelin’s Laurens Proving Grounds (LPG). The South Carolina-based company managed to achieve this range by using a massive 257 kWh battery pack. It is quite impressive considering that the battery was used to power up a ~27,500 lbs vehicle.
In order to serve any regular transit route in United States, the company is planning on offering a 10 modules pack as a recent test was conducted and the result was that by using a 10 modules 321 kWh battery pack, the vehicle could travel more than 300 miles on a single charge. During the max-range test, Catalyst XR was kept at an average speed of 30 mph and consumed 0.8 kWh per mile.
Proterra is one of a few bus manufacturers which focus on building a battery-powered technology from ground-up to be completely electric instead of retrofitting an exiting gas-powered bus. The company’s CEO, Ryan Popple was Director of Finance at Tesla Motors before joining VC firm Kleiner Perkins, a major investor in Proterra.
Proterra has sold more than 110 busses which are currently operate in transit programs all over the US.
