Automatic has released a dongle which can turn your old car into a smart car. However, the dongle can only works starting from car manufactured from 1996 onwards. All you need to do is to plug in the dongle into the standard diagnostics port hidden under the dash of your car model and the Automatic app which was installed on your smartphone, will pair the adapter and display useful information about your car and driving habits.
The dongle is working with iPhone and Android. It pairs the dongle and your smartphone apps via Bluetooth and stores your trip information into the cloud. The app offers features such as engine diagnostics, parked car locator and emergency crash response which works without having you open the app.
Automatic dongle is able to work with a lot of smartphone apps. It is suitable for a wide range of users. If you are business users such as professional driver or fleet manager, you might want to know things like mileage or the fuel cost of your vehicle; therefore, you can download apps such as Xero or FreshBooks and have the dongle to extract the necessary information from your car. If you just want to automate everyday’s hassles and quantify your life, you might want to download Pebble or RescueTime to know where you parked your car or to analyze how much you really drive respectively. If you are a new driver, carpooler or ask the mechanic to come to you, you can download License+ or UnMooch to coach your teen to safer driving or get friends to chip in for rides respectively.
Unlike Apple CarPlay or Android Auto which can only work with specific car model as it built into the car infotainment system, dongle does not need to do that and therefore, it is more convenient to use and has cheaper cost at $100.
