Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, announced earlier today that the company’s highest performance model S P85D is upgraded to offer 0 to 60 time of just 2.8 seconds and a ¼ mile of 0.9 seconds. This is achieved by using a newly designed “smart fuse” which is packaged as part of battery and electronic improvements.
The current standard fuse which is used in the current car model in the market will melt after certain amperage, so we will not know when it will happen or when it will arc. Therefore, unlike the standard fuse, the smart fuse will monitor constantly down to millisecond level and configured to cut power with extreme accuracy and at the right time.
As a result, this design gives the ability to run the battery up to maximum of 1500 amps when previously; it is only up to 1300 amps. Elon Musk also claimed that the car model is capable of accelerating at force of 1.1g which is faster than falling.
The upgrade will cost an additional $10,000 on top of $3000 cost of the required 90 kWh battery pack for the new owner of P85D whereas for the existing owners, there will be discounted price of $5000 for the next 6 months plus installation and labor. The biggest battery that the company offers currently can increased up to 90kWh rather than 85kWh which will provide up to 15 miles additional range.
On the other note, Elon Musk also mentioned that he is testing on the car model’s autonomous driving mode on 405 freeway where it is the most challenging test location as the black skidmarks are in higher contrast than the white separator line. It will be ready for public beta testing in the upcoming two to three weeks.
